For years, the property owner ignored its responsibilities. And what did Jim Salata do?Eliminated potential sources of catastrophic fire, removed debris and dry vegetation, secured windows to protect the integrity of a historical asset, repaired portions of the damaged roof, and pulled out a years-old, ragged tarp topping off an eyesore.Fine him? All public schools across California will be required to have gender-neutral bathrooms by July of 2026 — the outcome of a bill signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Saturday.Although some cities and school districts across the country have added gender-neutral bathrooms, the new law makes the Golden State the first to require it in schools statewide. The legislation was one of many supporting LGBTQ+ youth that became law in recent, including a new requirement for schools to provide “cultural competency” training to staff members on LGBTQ+ issues, and the creation of a task force that will identify LGBTQ+ students across the state, and push forward initiatives to support them.“California is proud to have some of the most robust laws in the nation when it comes to protecting and supporting our LGBTQ+ community, and we’re committed to the ongoing work to create safer, more inclusive spaces for all Californians,” said Newsom in a statement. “These measures will help protect vulne...49ers WR Aiyuk returns to practice, eager to play after shoulder injury

SANTA CLARA – Brandon Aiyuk watched the 49ers win their third 30-point effort in as many games from a different perspective last week.Specifically, he had to watch from the sideline. A shoulder issue kept him out of the 30-12 win over the New York Giants in the 49ers’ home opener at Levi’s Stadium.“It was different from the sideline, because you could feel the energy from the team and the stadium get picked up when a play like that is made,” Aiyuk said Monday of Deebo Samuel’s tackle-breaking reception. “It got me super excited. I can’t wait to go out there and just make a play.”Aiyuk practiced Monday and looks on track to return from a one-game hiatus to play Sunday, when the 49ers (3-0) host the Arizona Cardinals (1-2).“We’ll see how the rest of the week goes,” Aiyuk said.Aiyuk was hurt on his first catch in the Sept. 17 win at the Los Angeles Rams, then rotated that game with rookie Ronnie Bell. The 49ers listed Aiyuk as questionable entering their game against the Giants.“As the...As schools adopt 4-day week, parents wonder about day 5

By Heather Hollingsworth | Associated PressINDEPENDENCE, Mo. — It’s a Monday in September, but with schools closed, the three children in the Pruente household have nowhere to be. Callahan, 13, contorts herself into a backbend as 7-year-old Hudson fiddles with a balloon and 10-year-old Keegan plays the piano.Like a growing number of students around the U.S., the Pruente children are on a four-day school schedule, a change instituted this fall by their district in Independence, Missouri. To the kids, it’s terrific. “I have a three-day break of school!” exclaimed Hudson. But their mom, Brandi Pruente, who teaches French in a neighboring district in suburban Kansas City, is frustrated to find herself hunting for activities to keep her kids entertained and off electronics while she works five days a week.“I feel like I’m back in the COVID shutdown,” she said.Hundreds of school systems around the country have adopted four-day weeks in recent years,...Levi’s Stadium made $8.8 million in non-NFL events last fiscal year. Santa Clara will get $0.

SANTA CLARA — Though Levi’s Stadium raked in $8.8 million in non-NFL event revenue last year, no money from that tranche will go to the city’s general fund due to ongoing legal disputes with the San Francisco 49ers.The team manages the city-owned stadium for non-NFL events, and roughly half of those profits typically go back into the stadium authority — the body that oversee Levi’s — while the rest are supposed to flow to the city’s general fund to cover services like libraries, public safety and parks. But that didn’t happen in the 2022-23 fiscal year that ended March 31, 2023, according to a report reviewed by the Santa Clara City Council last week.During that time period, the stadium hosted seven ticketed non-NFL events — six concerts that included Coldplay and Elton John and one soccer match — and 69 large-scale non-ticketed special events, such as corporate parties. When looking at the budget earlier this year, Finance ...K-State agrees with hoops coach Jerome Tang on new 7-year contract

Kansas State and Jerome Tang agreed to a new seven-year contract Monday after the men’s basketball coach took a program that had just two returning players and was picked last in the Big 12 to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament last season. The contract replaces the six-year deal that Tang signed last year, when the longtime Baylor assistant was picked to replace the fired Bruce Weber in Manhattan. Tang will be paid $3 million for the upcoming season with $100,000 raises each year, finishing with $3.6 million for the 2029-30 season. He also will earn $200,000 retention bonuses after the next four seasons.“What Coach Tang and his staff did in their first year here was phenomenal,” said Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor, who was responsible for hiring him. “The run to the Elite Eight was remarkable, but what separates Coach Tang is his pure love of his players and the relationships he builds with everyone that he encounters.”Tang, who was the ceremonial drum leader f...At 0-3 after a week of bad news, the Bears are in crisis mode

Consider it a crisis for the Chicago Bears. A 41-10 beatdown by Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs was the final blow during a brutal week for a franchise reeling with 13 consecutive losses.“Just gotta have belief,” coach Matt Eberflus said Monday. “You’ve gotta have belief in each other. You’ve gotta have belief in the coaches, belief in the players, belief in the man sitting next to you and the work that we put in every single day and knowing that we’re gonna get better and knowing that history shows you that in the NFL, if you do that, if you’re able to have the stamina to push through obstacles and push through adversity, good things are gonna happen.”It’s been a long time since something good happened for the Bears (0-3). That’s something they’ll try to change when they host the dysfunctional Denver Broncos (0-3) this week. The Bears’ most recent win was a Monday night surprise at New England last Oct. 24. They came into this season with their sig...STORY REMOVED: US–Trump Aide-Book

A look at what’s happening in European soccer on Tuesday:ENGLANDDefending champion Manchester United looks to avoid another early-season setback when it hosts Crystal Palace in the third round of the League Cup. It’s the only all-Premier League clash among Tuesday’s games, with Wolverhampton visiting Ipswich and Burnley traveling to League Two side Salford City. United also faces Palace at home in the league on Saturday, and manager Erik ten Hag will have to decide how heavily to rotate for a competition that provided him with his first title at the club last season. United is already nine points behind Premier League leader Manchester City, and the League Cup may be Ten Hag’s best chance for silverware again. SPAINBarcelona visits Mallorca looking to extend its winning streak in the Spanish league to six matches. The defending champion sits at the top of the standings with 16 points, tied with fellow Catalan club Girona, which visits Villarreal on Wednesday. ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Sean McDermott had little time savoring a blowout win in his 100th game as the Buffalo Bills head coach.Dominating as his defense performed in forcing five turnovers and getting nine sacks in a 37-3 victory at Washington on Sunday, McDermott was already focused on Buffalo’s next opponent: the Miami Dolphins.“On to Game 101. Honestly, Week 4,” said McDermott, after improving to 64-36. “I think I just saw Miami put up 70-plus points. So, long week ahead.”McDermott can be excused for suggesting Miami’s output was 70-plus, because the challenge ahead can’t be overstated even by someone who is acutely familiar with the Dolphins, and has a 11-2 record against Buffalo’s AFC East rival. With the New York Jets (1-2) struggling minus Aaron Rodgers, and the offensively challenged Patriots limping to a 1-2 start, the Dolphins-Bills outing on Sunday represents an enticing early season division showdown. The Dolphins (3-0) enter Monday leading the NFL in points score...Latest news
