MADRID (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz made sure he wouldn’t be among the top seeds being upset at the Madrid Open on Tuesday, playing well from the start to secure his spot in the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Alexander Zverev. After both second-seeded Daniil Medvedev and fifth-seeded Andrey Rublev lost their fourth-round matches at the clay-court tournament, Alcaraz cruised past 13th-seeded Zverev to stay on track to defend his title at home.Fourth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas also avoided an upset, defeating Bernabe Zapata Miralles 6-3, 6-1. In the women’s draw, second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka reached the last four by rallying past Mayar Sherif in three sets. The match between Alcaraz and Zverev was a rematch of last year’s Madrid final, which Alcaraz also comfortably won against the former two-time champion in the Spanish capital.“For me it’s amazing to play the level that I played today,” Alcaraz said. “I feel really good right now and this match gives me a lot of confidenc...Court hears appeal by prosecutor suspended by DeSantis

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Federal appeals judges on Tuesday heard arguments over whether Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis wrongly suspended an elected state prosecutor last year after comments he made opposing abortion prosecutions. The three-judge panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard oral arguments in an appeal filed by Andrew Warren in seeking to regain his job. The Republican governor last year suspended Warren, a twice-elected state attorney for Florida’s Hillsborough County and a Democrat, accusing him of neglect of duty. DeSantis suspended Warren last year over the elected prosecutor’s signing of a statement, along with other prosecutors across the country, opposing criminal charges against abortion providers, or women seeking abortions, as well as his policies on not charging people with some minor crimes. Florida has a 15-week abortion ban and DeSantis last month signed into law a ban on abortions after six weeks of pregnancy. DeSantis has used his executive po...Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers wins his first NBA Most Valuable Player award

DOVER, Del. (AP) — The Democrat-controlled state Senate voted along party lines Tuesday to pass a bill requiring anyone in Delaware wanting to buy a handgun to first be fingerprinted, undergo training and obtain permission from the state. The vote came after more than two hours of debate in which gun-control advocates argued that the proposal will help reduce the number of homicides and suicides in Delaware. Opponents argued that the bill infringes on the rights of law-abiding citizens and will have no effect on criminals responsible for the state’s gun violence problem.Chief sponsor Sen. Elizabeth Lockman, suggested, however, that even criminals will obey the permit requirement if the bill becomes law.“Best of all, we know that every handgun owner in our state will have undergone a firearms training course,” said Lockman, a Wilmington Democrat, adding that such training will reduce the numbers of accidental shootings, suicides and gun thefts. Critics argued that a permitting process...Colorado man suing sheriff's office for excessive use of Taser during traffic stop
