Associated PressThe owner of the Wagner private military contractor made his most direct challenge to the Kremlin yet on Friday, calling for an armed rebellion aimed at ousting Russia’s defense minister. The security services reacted immediately by calling for the arrest of Yevgeny Prigozhin and opening a criminal investigation. In a sign of how seriously the Kremlin was taking the threat, security was heightened in Moscow and in Rostov-on-Don, which is home to the Russian military headquarters for the southern region and also oversees the fighting in Ukraine. While the outcome of the confrontation was still unclear, it appeared likely to further hinder Moscow’s war effort as Kyiv’s forces were probing Russian defenses in the initial stages of a counteroffensive. Prigozhin claimed early Saturday that his forces had crossed into Russia from Ukraine and had reached Rostov, saying they faced no resistance from young conscripts at checkpoints and that his forces “...More than 20 years later, authorities identify human remains found in Redondo Beach

A grand jury report analyzing in-custody deaths at two Ventura County jails is shedding new light on the alleged failures to prevent inmate deaths and the lack of transparency regarding the status of ongoing investigations. The 27-page document released this week highlights several failures at the two jails, including jail staff not using recommended best practice for preventing suicide in the facilities. The grand jury, which is comprised of a panel of 19 local citizens, found that employees at the Todd Road Jail in Santa Paula and the Pre-Trial Detention Center in Ventura each followed the minimum suicide prevention and response protocols required by state law, but did not follow the "recommended best practice," which includes joint training of deputies and medical personnel assigned to jail. They cited increased communication with families and a better orientation process as keys to prevent suicide in jails. In total, from 2016 to 2022, four in-custody deaths were the result of suic...Woman abandons newborn after giving birth in Ventura alley

SAN FRANCISCO — Trayce Jackson-Davis grew anxious as each pick passed. The Indiana Hoosier center had been tabbed a late-first or early-second-round pick, but teams were passing on him.At 9:15 p.m. PT, Jackson-Davis fired off a tweet.“Y’all will regret it,” he said. “I promise you.”Almost every NBA team had called to strike a deal, his agent James Dunleavy told him, but most picks fell through and others came in only with two-way contract offers. Dunleavy — brother of new Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. — assured him that a guaranteed contract would arise.“I was anxious. I got upset and let the tweet fly,” he said on Friday at an introductory press conference at Chase Center. “Same time, I play with a chip on my shoulder.”About an hour after Jackson-Davis, 23, sent his tweet, the Warriors came calling with a guaranteed spot. OAKLAND — The powerful oversight body responsible for finding Oakland’s next police chief is caught in a messy internal fight over its own leader’s job performance. With tensions ratcheting up even further this week, the deepening divisions in the Oakland Police Commission raise questions about whether the civilian-led group can effectively oversee reform of a police department seeking an end to federal oversight. On Thursday night, the commission selected a firm that will conduct a nationwide search for the department’s new chief — a position that has been vacant for four months. But at the same meeting, the group’s chair, Tyfahra Milele, took the growing conflict a step further, suggesting that the calls from other commissioners for her to step down stem not from a political disagreement but a venting of personal issues.“My scholarly work was on trauma, and now it’s common knowledge that trauma is most often caused by the traumatized,...Bay Area man convicted of killing two cops wants you to know he’s not a snitch

OAKLAND — A former U.S. Air Force sergeant convicted of murdering two law enforcement officers in separate ambush-style attacks in 2020 is now apparently concerned that a recent court filing will damage his reputation in prison.Attorneys for Steven Carrillo, who pleaded guilty to murdering Federal Protective Services Officer David Patrick Underwood in Oakland and Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller in Ben Lomond, filed a recent court document pushing back against statements made by Carrillo’s co-defendant in the Underwood murder case. The attorneys for Robert Allan Justus, who is set for trial in September, claimed Carrillo gave a recent FBI interview regarding Underwood’s killing. Both murders were motivated by Carrillo and Jutus’ ties to the so-called Boogaloo Movement, a loosely organized anti-government group that believes a second Civil War is imminent. The recent opposing court filings demonstrate just how far Carrillo and Justus have fallen ...Suspect taken into custody in connection to death of Oakland baker
