Maine’s governor to form panel to probe how authorities handled previous concerns about Lewiston gunman

(CNN) — Maine Gov. Janet Mills announced Wednesday she plans to establish an independent commission of experts to probe the Lewiston mass shooting, the “months preceding the shooting and the police response to it.”“I know that the Maine State Police are working hard to conduct a thorough and comprehensive criminal investigation of the shooting, but I also believe that the gravity of this attack on our people – an attack that strikes at the core of who we are and the values we hold dear – demands a higher level of scrutiny,” Mills said in a statement. There were previous warnings about Robert Card – the US Army reservist who authorities say killed 18 people and wounded 13 others – from both the Army and his family, CNN has reported, and there were two attempts by law enforcement to check on him just weeks before the killings. One of those warnings came after a soldier became concerned Card would “snap and commit a mass shooting.” Before that, Card’s f...

Rep. George Santos survives effort to expel him from the House. But he still faces an ethics report

Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 02:31:02 GMT

By KEVIN FREKING and STEPHEN GROVES (Associated Press)WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. George Santos easily survived a vote Wednesday to expel him from the House as most Republicans and 31 Democrats opted to withhold punishment while both his criminal trial and a House Ethics Committee investigation proceed. The effort to kick Santos out of the House was led by his fellow New York Republicans, who are anxious to distance themselves from a colleague infamous for fabricating his life story and accused of stealing from donors, lying to Congress and receiving unemployment benefits he did not deserve. But the resolution failed to gain the required two-thirds vote. Supporters could not even gain a simple majority, with the final vote being 179 for expulsion and 213 against. To succeed, numerous Republican lawmakers would have had to break ranks with newly elected Speaker Mike Johnson, who has said Santos should get his day in court. Johnson, R-La., also recently told Fox News that if Congress is...

SAN DIEGO -- Parking meters are now active in parts of Pacific Beach. The meters, which are part of a year-long pilot program, are located where there was already a two-hour parking limit. The city argues the meters will encourage parking turnover so more people can access shops and restaurants. However, not everyone is on board. Some neighbors have said they are curious to see how the new meters will play out.Kyle MacDougall and Gabriel Granados live in North Pacific Beach and say they often use ride shares to the beach.Granados said he thinks the new meters will help regulate parking flow.“If someone is going to be at the beach, and they want to be there for 5, 6 hours, that’s totally cool, but I don’t think that you should take up the prime road parking lot, so I gotta see it. I think it’s an interesting take."From Saturday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., people will have to pay $1.25 an hour at meters along Garnet Avenue between Mission Boulevard and Fanuel Street. Timberwolves: Jaden McDaniels’ first game back from calf injury was a good one

Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 02:31:02 GMT

One positive from Minnesota’s debacle Monday in Atlanta was the return of Jaden McDaniels. The wing — playing in his first game after straining his calf in the preseason opener in Abu Dhabi — finished with 12 points on 5 for 6 shooting while serving as one of the Wolves’ few apt defenders. That all came in 24 minutes, as McDaniels is playing limited minutes while working himself back.“He looked good,” Timberwolves coach Chris Finch told reporters. “It was unfortunate he was on a minutes restriction, because we really could’ve used him out there guarding (Dejounte) Murray, but he spent the bulk of his minutes guarding (Trae) Young and he did a good job.”McDaniels said it “felt good to be back, just playing basketball.” He noted he found a good rhythm early. The early buckets helped, as did the Timberwolves’ ramp-up strategy.“I’ve been playing a little bit before I got to play in a game — like playing in stay-in-shape league (after practice) and stuff, so I’ve been able to hoop a litt...

Zeynep Tufekci: Past lies about war in the Middle East are getting in the way of the truth today

Moshe Lavi, whose relatives have been taken hostage by Hamas, recently talked to a group of New York Times journalists about his family’s agony. His pained voice turned to anger when he recounted encountering disbelief that Hamas committed terrible atrocities when it attacked Israel. Lavi seemed especially bewildered by people “arguing over the semantics” of whether people were beheaded or their heads fell off or even whether there were hostages in the Gaza Strip. In one particularly gruesome twist, there’s been an uproar over whether Hamas had beheaded babies — an unverified claim that President Joe Biden repeated before the White House walked it back and has been subject to much discussion since.Indeed, since Hamas did murder children and take others as hostages, should it get credit if it didn’t also behead them? It’s an appalling thought. Some of this skepticism is surely the result of antisemitism. But that’s not all that’s going on.One key reason for some of the incidents of doub...
