DETROIT — Since taking a step forward by putting together a three-game winning streak with a 4-1 victory here Friday, the Twins were on the verge of taking another two steps back on Sunday. But four Minnesota relievers pitched scoreless baseball while the Twins tied the game, then took a lead in the 10th, before Jhoan Duran came in to close out a 6-3 victory in the rubber match of a three-game series at Comerica Park.Automatic runner Carlos Correa scored from second on a Royce Lewis grounder off Brandon White (1-1) that got past Nick Maton at third, sliding his left hand over the plate as the relay throw got away from catcher Jake Rogers for a 4-3 lead.Lewis went to second on the throw, and Willi Castro drove him home with a single to center field that made it 6-3. Duran retired the three batters he faced in the 10th on two groundouts and a strikeout to earn his 13th save.It was a big rally for the Twins, who have won four of five games heading into a three-game series at National Le...Why St. Paul’s rent-control ordinance couldn’t save Selby Ave. renters from 8% rent hikes

When residents of Selby Avenue’s stylish Blair Boutique Apartments were hit with rent increases of up to $158 per month, they appealed to the city of St. Paul. How could their rents be rising as much as 8% when the city’s voter-approved rent-control ordinance generally caps annual increases at 3%?But when a city hearing officer crunched the numbers provided by the property owner, she found Reacor Limited and Selby Avenue Realty technically could qualify for rent increases of more than 16%, double what the landlord had been approved for.The Blair case illustrates the disconnect between what St. Paul voters approved and what ultimately became law, following landlords’ complaints, developers’ threats and changes approved by the city council. The ordinance may say 3%, but landlords have had little trouble justifying rent hikes of up to 8%.The Blair tenants were taken aback by the hearing officer’s conclusions but resolute. Together, residents of at least fou...Man arrested in Saugerties for assault, weapon charges

Ashtin Gamblin never realized how expensive it would be to survive a mass shooting. But after being shot nine times in the attack at an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, last November, the bills started piling up for Gamblin. Dozens of other survivors and families of the five people killed have found themselves in a similar bind. They lost paychecks, fell behind on rent and had to replace clothing seized as evidence.Colorado has raised more than $3 million in donations for people affected by the Club Q shooting and distributed about $2 million, through a nonprofit called the Colorado Healing Fund. But several survivors say the money has come too slowly, with too much red tape.Just days before the accused shooter is scheduled to appear in state court, their frustrations burst into public when several survivors held a news conference pleading for the money to be handed out faster.Fund officials say that they have done their best to efficiently distribute funds to cover vict...Motorcyclist killed in crash in Calabasas

SAN FRANCISCO — First baseman LaMonte Wade Jr. was out of the lineup Sunday with lower back stiffness and was spotted in the clubhouse with a cold pack wrapped around his waist and back.Wade didn’t finish Saturday’s win over Arizona, and Kapler was keeping him off his feet with hopes that an off day before the club visits the Toronto Blue Jays will be enough recovery time to get back in the lineup.“We’re going to try and get him ready to come off the bench,” Kapler said.Wade has been bothered by both his back and his side, with Sunday’s issue related mostly to his back.“I think they’re all sort of related, but yesterday was lower back tightness,” Kapler said.Relief pitcher Luke Jackson, who departed in the same game with lower back stiffness, will need a little more time. This would turn into an unforgettable week for Erik Karlsson if he were to win the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s best defenseman for the third time in his standout 14-year career. There’s a chance it could be a life-altering week for Karlsson, as well. After a record-breaking 101-point season for the San Jose Sharks, Karlsson, 33, is a finalist for both the Norris Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Award as the league’s most outstanding player as voted by members of the NHL Players’ Association. Both trophies will be handed out Monday at the NHL Awards show in Nashville. While Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers is the overwhelming favorite to capture the Ted Lindsay Award, named after the Hall of Fame winger who fought for players’ rights, Karlsson is viewed as the likely choice for the Norris. Not only was his point total the highest of his career, but he shattered the Sharks’ previous single-season points record for a defenseman of 83 – set by Brent Burns in 2018-19 – and ranked 11th in the N...CHP: DUI arrest for San Jose driver who plunged off Santa Cruz cliff
