SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) -- Former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes promised a federal judge on Friday that she will not attempt to flee the country before she begins serving her 11-year prison sentence next month. The disgraced Silicon Valley entrepreneur recently gave birth to her second child. Holmes' defense attorney, Amy Saharia, said Holmes would never abandon her two young children, nor put her parents' house in jeopardy. The house's value is being used as Holmes' bond. Prosecutors took issue with Holmes' promise. Prosecutor Kelly Volkar asserted that the 38-year-old Woodside woman is a flight risk. "She has the means and the motive to flee," Volkar told the judge. ___Parent company of Silicon Valley Bank files for bankruptcyNEW YORK (AP) — The parent company of Silicon Valley Bank has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The move comes a week after the tech-focused bank failed in a sudden collapse that set off fears of wider problems in the global banking system. The filing on Friday from SVB Financial Group was widely expected. Much of the company is now under the control of banking regulators. The bank was seized last week by the federal government. In other developments, the bank and two of its executives were targeted in a class action lawsuit that claims the company did not disclose the risks that future interest rate increases would have on its business.___Biden calls for tougher penalties for execs of failed banksWASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is calling on Congress to allow regulators to impose tougher penalties on the executives of failed banks, including clawing back compensation and making it easier to bar them from w...Ducksch double salvages draw for Bremen at Gladbach

MÖNCHENGLADBACH, Germany (AP) — Two goals from Marvin Ducksch salvaged a draw for Werder Bremen against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga on Friday and punished Gladbach for wasteful shooting.Gladbach was looking for a landmark 500th home win in Bundesliga history and on course after goals by Marcus Thuram and Florian Neuhaus. Ducksch twice leveled the score for an otherwise unthreatening Bremen team and could have won the game in stoppage time.Gladbach dominated the first half but failed to score off a series of chances. Thuram gave Gladbach the lead in the 48th minute by surging through the defense and powering the ball past goalkeeper Michael Zetterer, a late replacement for ill first-choice keeper Jiri Pavlenka.Thuram’s misses ended up as important as his goal, though. The French striker had two good chances saved by Zetterer and once missed the target when trying an audacious lofted backheel finish. COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — This wasn’t the NCAA Tournament debut South Carolina coach Dawn Staley hoped to see from her top-seeded Gamecocks. The final scored showed a 72-40 blowout over No. 16 seed Norfolk State (26-7) on Friday. Staley saw poor shooting early and a disjointed attack that could cost her team down the road. “If it wasn’t for the way we play defense, (Norfolk State) would’ve probably given us a lot of trouble given how we shot the ball,” Staley said. Zia Cooke scored 11 points as South Carolina moved five wins away from a perfect season. Aliyah Boston had seven points, nine rebounds and two blocks for the Gamecocks (33-0), who won their 39th straight game dating back to last year’s NCAA title run. They also moved to 11-0 in first-round games under Staley. Not that much of that mattered to the two-time national championship coach. She was so frustrated with her attack, she called an early timeout in the second quarter with her team ahead 24-12 — som...Latest news
