Dear Amy: My partner (we live together) owns a vacation home in the Southwest. Months ago, he made plans to take three of his teenage grandchildren there over spring break. After that plan was hatched, I was diagnosed with cancer and am undergoing chemotherapy.I had hoped that he would cancel his plans so he could be at our home to help me out, but he went ahead and make airline reservations, after he knew the dates of his vacation would coincide with my treatment.I am feeling hurt, rejected and unimportant to him, in addition to feeling the ill effects of my treatment.I could have used his help with meals, driving to the clinic, and overall companionship. My daughter, who has a full-time job, stepped in.Amy, he rarely sees these grandchildren, who live within 15 minutes of us.Why couldn’t he have just scheduled a few spring break outings at home instead of traveling during this crucial time?— Sad and SufferingDear Sad: My mother once said to me, “Remember: People do what they w...Germany takes in 32 survivors from migrant shipwreck off Italy

Germany has accepted 32 survivors of last month's migrant boatwreck off Southern Italy, according to Italian and United Nations authorities.More than 90 people were killed in an accident at sea that occurred in Italian territorial waters on February 26th, near Cutro in the Calabria Region.According to Matteo Piantedosi, Italy's Interior Minister, the total number of survivors was 80.A Calabria provincial government office stated that the International Organization for Migration (IOM), helped organize a charter flight for 32 survivors to Hamburg."IOM is happy that it supported relocation under the EU voluntary solidarity mechanism," IOM stated separately via Twitter.According to ANSA, survivors will be joining relatives who are already in Germany.A spokesperson for IOM stated that they could apply for asylum.Italy's right-wing government has repeatedly called on other European Union countries to accept more migrants, despite facing an increase in North African sea arrivals.Accusation...Here’s why this is one of the worst times to buy a car in decades

By Christopher Hickey and Alex Leeds Matthews | CNNIt has almost never been as hard to buy a new or used car in the United States as it is today, despite improving supply issues and inflation beginning to steady.Vehicle transaction prices — the price you actually end up paying after any dealer discounts or markups — have been climbing higher and faster since 2020 than any other point in more than 35 years, according to recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The consumer price indexes for both new and used cars — the average changes in vehicle transaction price over time — are much higher than they were four years ago in 2019.There is a silver lining. BLS data shows inflation for used cars has been cooling down just as dramatically since December 2022 as it increased in the months before that. But used cars have a long way to go before approaching 2019 sales prices and new car prices have yet to slow down. The average transaction price of a new car has jumped nearly $12,000 i...CMT Awards 2023: See who won

The Leo Cronin Fish Viewing area near Samuel Taylor State Park in Lagunitas is a popular spot to try to spot spawning salmon, which means a crowded parking lot on weekends. But if you can get there before the crowds or after they’ve thinned, it’s also a great jumping off point for several hikes into the redwoods and beyond.Just across Sir Francis Drake is the Cross Marin Trail, which takes users across the bridge over Inkwells and onto the flat, usually roomy path into the park. It’s possible to do about 11 miles in total if you take the trail past the campgrounds to most distant turnaround point. For a shorter journey, you can turn around at the bridge in the park that leads to the picnic area for a total four-mile round trip.Related ArticlesLifestyle | 5 great places to see California’s wildflower season, possibly the best in 20 years Lifestyle | Marin waterfalls draw visitors following historic rains Lifestyle | Lawsuit: Plans for ...Longtime Bay Area Lucky’s grocery story to close

Persistent allegations of sexual misconduct at the Redlands Police Department, culminating with a new claim alleging three ranking supervisors attempted to cover up evidence, have triggered an administrative investigation by the city and an FBI probe. In a claim for damages filed against the city on March 16, forensic specialist Geneva Holzer alleges that in December 2019, now retired Deputy Chief Mike Reiss, then a lieutenant, and Sgt. Kyle Alexander attempted to destroy physical evidence of sexual misconduct by Reiss.Holzer found what she believed to be a semen stain on an office chair of a former employee who sued the city last August, alleging she was coerced into engaging in sexual acts with Reiss to advance at the department. In her lawsuit, former property and evidence technician Julie Alvarado-Salcido alleged, among other things, that she was coerced into performing oral sex on Reiss in her office in August 2019.Holzer was not aware of Salcido’s specific allegations at the tim...Could the aging boom change our prejudice against ‘old?’

Barry Rashap, 79, felt it at the bank, where a woman stepped in front of him because he was a step too slow to get in line.“I actually said something, but she didn’t respond,” Rashap said. “But when she was done and I got up to the teller, he sort of said, ‘Good for you.’ He saw that she was rude to me because of my age.”For Barbara Sloate, 86, the feeling has come as she’s aged into what she calls “an also.”“At a certain point, you aren’t considered normal,” Sloate said. “It’s like, ‘Also, Mom will be there.’ You’re an also, an afterthought, even in your own life.”And Darrielle Wilson, 89, said simply that it’s why she’s wary about disclosing her true age.“If I tell you I’m almost 90, then that’s it; I’m out. No invites to parties or anything. But if I can still look closer to 70, then I’m still considered part of life.“I’m not talking about vanity,” she added. “I’m talking about being considered still truly alive, or not, because of your age. And that feeling, right there, that’s ...Feds have new evidence of potential obstruction in Trump Mar-a-Lago documents case, newspaper reports

The Justice Department has obtained new evidence suggesting potential obstruction by former President Donald Trump in the agency’s probe of his handling of classified documents, The Washington Post reported Sunday.Investigators have information that indicates Trump personally reviewed some of the documents in his Mar-a-Lago home after receiving a subpoena from the Justice Department, people familiar with the investigation told the Post, out of an apparent wish to hold on to some things. While the former president’s team returned some classified documents following the May 2022 subpoena, the FBI’s August search turned up more that hadn’t been returned.Additional evidence obtained by investigators suggests that Trump told others to mislead government officials trying to recover documents from his time in the White House before the subpoena last year, which the Post noted could be evidence of his intent.CNN has confirmed that investigators have emails and text messages from Molly Michae...Latest news
