HOLLIS, Maine (AP) — A motorist who veered off a highway and struck four state troopers was charged with operating under the influence of drugs, officials said Monday, as two of the troopers remained hospitalized.Three troopers and a trooper-in-training were at the end of a driveway while investigating a family dispute when the car sped off Route 202 and “threaded the needle” by avoiding three parked cruisers with flashing lights to hit the law enforcement officers late Sunday, Col. William Ross, the state police chief, told reporters at a briefing in Augusta.York County Sheriff William King said there was no evidence that the motorist, Tyler Croston, 24, of Westbrook, tried to brake but he could not say whether the crash was an intentional act.Trooper Jake Mowry and trainee Shane St. Pierre remained at Maine Medical Center with serious injuries Monday morning, while Troopers David Lemieux and Dakota Stewart were discharged earlier, Ross said. All four troopers had injuries including...Elton John in ‘good health’ after being hospitalized for fall at his French Riviera home

By HANNAH SCHOENBAUM (Associated Press)CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — An apparent shooting at the University of North Carolina flagship campus on Monday led to a school-wide alert warning of an “armed, dangerous person on or near campus” and urging people to go inside and avoid windows.Authorities didn’t immediately provide details of the alleged shooting on the Chapel Hill campus, including whether anyone had been shot. But Gov. Roy Cooper posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he had spoken to the Orange County sheriff and the state’s public safety secretary and “pledged all state resources needed to capture the shooter and protect the UNC campus.”Cooper’s office declined to provide further information, saying it didn’t want to get ahead of what local authorities were saying. School officials said as soon as they had verified information, they would share it. They didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking further details. Two police officers move around...‘Reinventing Elvis: The ’68 Comeback’ review: An aging pop star comes roaring back, if only for a moment

Nina Metz | Chicago Tribune (TNS)The music and persona of Elvis Presley were potent influences on 20th-century pop culture and that’s reason enough to be curious about his place in history. But I am particularly interested in comeback stories and the career span of a pop star. You can only be the face of youth culture for so long before changing tastes push you to the side. What then? The music industry is unforgiving of these inevitable growing pains. Sometimes performers find a compelling middle ground between nostalgia act and fading away altogether. Most aren’t so lucky. Most don’t have the talent and charisma of Presley, either. Oh, what could have been. The Paramount+ documentary “Reinventing Elvis: The ‘68 Comeback” offers a hint as to how Presley might have navigated his career if things had panned out differently — namely, if he had extricated himself from his domineering manager Colonel Tom Parker, who was intent on keeping the money train rolling at the expense of anything ...Gunfire that injured two at Chicago White Sox game late Friday likely originated inside ballpark, police leaders say

A shooting incident that wounded two people at a Chicago White Sox game over the weekend most likely involved a gun going off inside Guaranteed Rate Field, the interim Chicago Police superintendent said Monday. Two women suffered gunshot wounds as they sat in the left field bleachers of Guaranteed Rate Field during the Friday night game between the White Sox and Oakland A’s. Officials have so far said little about where the bullets came from, or if someone brought a gun into the stadium, but interim CPD superintendent Fred Waller on Monday said investigators have nearly ruled out the possibility that the shots came from outside the ballpark.“We’re dispelling a lot of things,” Waller said during a brief press availability after a CPD graduation and promotion ceremony at Navy Pier. “(A shot) coming from outside is something we’ve almost completely dispelled. We’re still looking at every avenue. It’s still under investigation. Something fr...Quick Fix: Barbecued Pork Pasta Salad perfect for Labor Day (or anytime)

Well, it finally happened. After a devastating April losing streak, a fraught trade deadline revealing the team’s toxic culture, a literal punch to the face in Cleveland, lots more losing and a Crain’s Chicago Business report, White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf shocked the world. He fired top lieutenants Ken Williams and Rick Hahn. With a paltry three World Series wins over 117 years, it’s safe to say the arc of the White Sox universe is long, but it bends toward mediocrity. This season, the arc bends toward unwatchable. Williams and Hahn deserve credit for the magical World Series run. But they have always been symptoms of a larger problem. The root of the Sox rot is Reinsdorf, who has always prioritized profit margins and personal relationships over building a sustainable winner. Hiring Tony La Russa (the second time) showed his truest colors.Reinsdorf still has time to be the hero of this sad story. He has one option: Sell the team. Looking for a buyer, he should con...Boston police make at least five arrests during St. Anthony’s Feast Saturday

Boston police arrested at least five Saturday for underage drinking at the St. Anthony’s Feast in the North End, including one who “ran” into a cop in an attempt to prevent the arrest of another juvenile. The arrests came a week after police arrested one person at a separate festival and wrote at least 20 different reports based on underage drinking in the Italian district. Community members have urged police to step up enforcement after years of complaints of teenagers disrupting celebrations in the North End. Organizers even increased security at the St. Anthony’s Feast. In multiple police reports provided to the Herald Monday, Boston police described two incidents in which juveniles were caught underage drinking and then started to run away from police. Police said they temporarily shut down the festival in the evening because of disruptive juvenile activity. Two police officers saw a group of juveniles on N. OTTAWA — The federal government is looking for ways to bring more infant formula products to Canada while it overhauls regulations to prevent future shortages, an internal memo shows. Many parents still struggle to find the right formula for their babies at a reasonable price, after last year’s temporary shutdown of a U.S.-based manufacturing plant caused a major shortage of shipments to Canada. The bare shelves illustrated just how fragile Canada’s supply chain is when it comes to vital infant formula, which Canada does not produce domestically. The government is expected to reveal its long-term plans to deal with the problem this fall as part of an overhaul of outdated rules that govern how Canada approves infant formula products. Those changes could take years, though, so the government is considering a stopgap that would see the health minister exempt products from certain requirements.“This would allow harmonization with other jurisdictions before the comprehens...Latest news
