SAN FRANCISCO — Two airliners aborted landings at San Francisco International Airport last week after pilots spotted a Southwest Airlines jet taxiing across runways on which the other planes had been cleared to land.An air traffic controller told the Southwest pilots they should not have been on the runways during the May 19 incident. The Federal Aviation Administration said Thursday that the Southwest plane cleared the runways when the other planes passed directly overhead, and the decision to abort the landings was “precautionary.”“The FAA looked into the events and determined the appropriate steps were taken to ensure safe operations,” the agency said. The National Transportation Safety Board said it is not investigating the matter. The incident comes after a half-dozen close calls in recent months that are being investigated by safety officials. Those include one in February in which a FedEx plane flew about 100 feet (30 meters) over the top of a Southwest jet in Austin, Texas, aft...Rave arrival: California woman goes into labor at Electric Daisy Carnival

MILWAUKEE — Instead of their ace, Logan Webb, the Giants opted for a bullpen game Thursday in their first of four games with the Brewers.Webb was lined up to start the series opener on regular rest but will instead get a couple extra days, setting up a pitcher’s duel with Milwaukee’s Cy Young winner, Corbin Burnes, on Saturday. Left-hander Scott Alexander got the nod Thursday, the second time in the past four games the Giants have used an opener.Webb left his last start on Saturday with back tightness, but manager Gabe Kapler downplayed the significance of pushing back his next start.“We just like to give a guy an extra day or two when we can,” Kapler said Wednesday. “We saw what it did for Alex Cobb. We want to repeat that from time to time, give guys an extra day and come out with their best stuff.”It will be Webb’s second time this season pitching on six days’ rest, while Cobb has already done it twice, most recently on his last tur...Supreme Court limits EPA authority to protect wetlands

Chantell and Michael Sackett objected when federal officials identified a soggy portion of the property as a wetlands that required them to get a permit before filling it with rocks and soil.By a 5-4 vote, the court said in an opinion by Justice Samuel Alito that wetlands can only be...Debt ceiling talks on the brink as lawmakers leave town

Five years ago, California voters blessed their senior U.S. senator with a decisive vote of confidence, sending the then 85-year-old Dianne Feinstein back to the nation’s capital for the sixth time instead of a much younger fellow Democrat. But a poll out Thursday suggests many of those voters now have buyer’s remorse. The Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll found two out of three registered California voters surveyed now say Feinstein, who missed months in the Senate this year due to complications of shingles and reportedly suffers memory lapses, is “no longer fit to continue serving in the U.S. Senate.”Even so, the poll found voters divided over whether Feinstein should remain in office. While the largest proportion, 42%, said Feinstein should resign from the Senate and allow Gov. Gavin Newsom to appoint a successor, 27% said she should continue serving and 31% were undecided.“The poll clearly shows that while support for Senator Feinstein ...Kim Kardashian claims she’s protecting kids while slamming Kanye West on show

The shapewear mogul also appears to be referring to the series of offensive, hateful remarks the rapper made in late 2022 about Jewish people, including when he proclaimed in an interview with Alex Jones: “I like Hitler.”But it seems that Kardashian is undercutting her claims of protecting their four children by op...Latest news
