Fresh tree stumps the size of dining tables line the road at the Elkhorn Slough Reserve, the remains of hulking eucalyptus trees that blanketed the ground in a thick layer of aromatic wood chips. Nothing grows in the wreckage, but about 40 yards away, a grove of young oak trees flourishes.Mary Paul, a stewardship associate at the reserve just east of Moss Landing at the heart of the Monterey Bay, revels in the contrast. Where the oaks now stand, staff removed a 13-acre grove of eucalyptus in the 1990s and planted well over 10,000 acorns. In a few decades, the roadside site where eucalyptus trees were cut down this summer should match the restored oak savanna beside it.Paul hopes the restoration efforts at Elkhorn Slough will help quell public opposition to the removal of the eucalyptus — an invasive tree native to Australia that has become a California icon, and a shelter for migrating birds and Monarch butterflies, but must be removed because they crowd out native species, increase...New ‘turbo roundabout’ at Highways 25 and 156 is only the second of its kind in the U.S.

In the coming months, drivers in San Benito County will face a traffic pattern unlike anything else in the state: a three-lane rotary shaped like a stunted ninja star. This is only the second time the new design, called a turbo roundabout, is being implemented in the U.S. But if it meets its goal of reducing accidents at a crossroads with a history of harmful crashes, drivers across the country could be seeing more of them. The intersection of Highways 25 and 156 in Hollister has been notoriously dangerous — the site of more than twice as many accidents as similar intersections in the state, resulting in multiple injuries. In particular, there have been an unusual number of rear-impact and T-bone collisions there.Caltrans had previously attempted several small fixes, such as changing the timing on the traffic signals and adding rumble strips going up to the signal. But after these failed to resolve the problems, the agency opted to create a special roundabout.Caltrans is constructing...Oakland’s Measure Q money going unspent as fire danger at parks worsens

OAKLAND — Just before the pandemic helped plunge the city into financial crisis, Oakland voters did what they usually do at the ballot box: approve a new tax, this one intended to maintain and improve the city’s various parks.Three years later, the tax has accumulated millions of dollars, but a new audit finds the city also underspends the revenue each year — accumulating about $22 million in rolled-over balance at a time when fire-safety advocates describe Oakland’s parks as lacking maintenance and being at high risk for wildfires. The audit, published last week, found that it’s also unclear if the money is being spent effectively, given that the city doesn’t take a “data-driven strategy” with clear baseline goals for what good park maintenance looks like.It offers a look into how one of Oakland’s various tax measures — which are almost always approved by a large majority of voters — is actually performing amid a hist...2 killed, 8 wounded at New Year’s party shooting in Southern California
