BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Bruins are winning so much that clinching their division didn’t merit any celebration. Captain Patrice Bergeron didn’t even realize it had happened.Garnet Hathaway scored the tiebreaking goal late in the second period and the NHL-best Boston Bruins wrapped up first place in the Atlantic Division with their sixth straight victory, 2-1 over the Tampa Bay Lightning, on Saturday. The win was the Bruins’ 56th and moves them one behind the club record set in 1970-71. It also keeps them on pace to set the NHL record for victories in a regular season with 10 games left. The Detroit Red Wings won 62 in 1995-96 and Tampa Bay matched it in their final regular-season game (at TD Garden in Boston) in 2018-19.“I forgot because things were happening so quickly,” Bruins first-year coach Jim Montgomery said when asked what he told his team about winning the division. “We didn’t actually talk about the Atlantic Division, but its a tremendous feat with 10 game...JUST ONE STATION: Sneak peek at movie filming inside Bova’s Bakery in Boston

Matt Damon and Casey Affleck have been drawing crowds as they continue to film scenes for their upcoming movie “The Instigators” at locations across Boston. One of the biggest draws was Bova’s Bakery in the North End, where owner Ralph Bova’s 24/7 bakery had to close his doors to business for several days for the first time in decades. The business has since reopened to customers. Now that filming is wrapped, Ralph Bova is giving 7NEWS a little insight into the scenes filmed in his bakery. He says Damon and Affleck’s characters are working as cooks in the bakery and an officer comes in to ask them questions about a bank robbery.Bova said he had to send a worker to help the film crew work the cash register.“We made everything fresh from scratch,” Bova said of the delicious treats that are back on shelves. “So everything you see here was made yesterday — that was intense.”Yankees Notebook: Jhony Brito enters the rotation mix

With Luis Severino injured, the Yankees may need to tap even further into their starting pitching depth early this season. With Carlos Rodon and Frankie Montas already out to start the year, Severino is dealing with a low-grade lat strain on his right side. The injury will keep Severino from making what would have been his first start of the season and will “probably” land him on the injured list, according to Aaron Boone. The manager added that, should the Yankees require a fifth starter during Severino’s absence, Jhony Brito could join the rotation. Domingo German and Clarke Schmidt, who is now scheduled to start the second game of the season, are already filling in for Rodon and Montas.Brito, the Yanks’ 27th-best prospect, will start against the Blue Jays on Sunday in what was supposed to be Severino’s final spring training outing. A 25-year-old righty from the Dominican Republic, Brito owns a 3.52 ERA, seven strikeouts and zero walks over 7.2 innings ...Chicago Cubs officially name rookie right-hander Hayden Wesneski the No. 5 starter: ‘He’s earned it’

Of all the trades Chicago Cubs President Jed Hoyer made since the sell-off in summer 2021, the biggest one might have involved a middle reliever instead of one of the beloved stars from the 2016 team. The Cubs sent Scott Effross to the New York Yankees on July 31, 2022, for pitching prospect Hayden Wesneski in a deal that made little noise at the time. But Wesneski proved himself from the start, throwing five scoreless innings against the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field in his Sept. 6 debut, then dominating in his brief September audition and in Cactus League action this spring. On Saturday manager David Ross confirmed the obvious, naming Wesneski the No. 5 starter behind Marcus Stroman, Jameson Taillon, Justin Steele and Drew Smyly. Wesneski said he was “speechless” Thursday after Ross gave him the news.“Being called to the big leagues is special, but this is nothing to poo-poo on,” he told reporters at the Cubs complex Saturday.Wesneski’s parents were i...Final Mets 26-man roster projection as spring training comes to a close

PORT ST. LUCIE — Mets’ manager Buck Showalter has spent the last week of the Grapefruit League season evaluating the talent he has in the big league locker room and trying to balance their spring results with the track records that some of them have. The manager made a poignant observation earlier this week: You can’t develop a track record if you don’t get the opportunity to develop one. So, will the Mets give one or two of their top prospects a chance? Or will they trust the track records of some scuffling veterans?Injuries have taken a toll on the pitching staff and the Mets are still trying to figure out how to contend with the loss of closer Edwin Diaz, but the position player group may escape spring training unscathed. Brandon Nimmo worked out all week on the back fields of the Mets’ Clover Field complex and reported no pain or soreness in his sprained right knee or right ankle. He returned to action Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals, with t...Magic’s Wendell Carter wins 2022-23 Rich & Helen DeVos Community Enrichment Award

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Aaron Judge didn’t think twice when asked to identify one thing that has stood out the most about Anthony Volpe this spring.Judge could have mentioned Volpe’s speed, which he used to start Friday’s game with a bloop triple. Judge could have highlighted the 21-year-old’s bat-to-ball skills, which Volpe used to raise his spring training average to .314 in the Yankees’ 8-3 win over the Phillies. Judge could have even praised Volpe’s fielding and quiet confidence, both of which have helped the New Jersey native in his quest to become the Bombers’ starting shortstop. But instead, the Yankees captain singled out Volpe’s work ethic.“He just shows up ready to work. He’s prepared. Very rarely do you see that at such a young age,” Judge said, noting that neophytes can sometimes be a bit immature or unprepared for big moments. “But he’s seemed ready to go every single game I’ve play behi...Bruins notes: Garnet Hathaway looking good in black and gold

Garnet Hathaway looks ready for the playoffs to start. And the Maine native has looked ready to be a Bruin his whole life.Hathaway was front and center in a taut, grind-it-out game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. He stood toe-to-toe with big Pat Maroon in a fight to start the game and then scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal late in the second period in the B’s Atlantic Division-clinching 2-1 win over the Bolts.Hathaway is exactly what the Bruins bargained for when they got him in a trade with the Washington Capitals with Dmitry Orlov.“He’s been great,” said Patrice Bergeron, whose line was often checked by Hathaway’s line before the trade. “I’ve always liked his game. I guess you don’t like playing against him, but he’s very efficient, very good for his team. He came in and fit in nicely on that line, but also off the ice. He’s a great guy. He seems to be a character guy. He’s leading his own way, leading b...Latest news
