Board Game Day brings dozens of gamers to Milpitas Library

The Milpitas Library opened its auditorium to the Fremont Board Gamers Group for the first time on Saturday, Aug. 19.Claude Robinson started the group in January, spurred by the increasing interest in board games since the pandemic, and inspired by the success of a similar group in Oakland. The group initially met at the Bigger Better Games store in Fremont and now sets up at the Fremont Library every other Sunday.Jonathan Cheung and Johnny Chin joined Robinson to lead the expansion of the group. They approached Nicole Sam, Milpitas Library’s adult reference librarian, to host a meet for adult gamers from around the Bay Area. Sam asked the group for their games wish list, which included Bohnanza, Codenames, Carcassonne and Patchwork.Board Game Day drew 35 gamers to the Milpitas Library to discover new games, and share their own. Patrick Klein, longtime artistic director of Palo Alto Players, has accepted a new position as production manager at Center Repertory Theatre in Walnut Creek.Klein first joined PAP 14 years ago as the production manager/technical director, moving next to associate artistic director. A group of 17 Los Gatos High School students made their way across the world this summer to just outside of Tokyo for an immersive 12-day exchange program with Sakuragaoka High School.For the second part of the exchange, a group of 17 students from Sakuragaoka High School is currently visiting the Los Gatos High campus.The exchange students each shadow the classes of the host student they live with during the trip. In Japan, the Los Gatos students also experienced flower arranging and a Japanese tea ceremony.“To go into Japan and experience the culture, experience school life and make friends with the Japanese students – that’s the word,” said Kumi Kobayashi, a Japanese language teacher who helps facilitate the program.Words are an important part of the program, run by Pacific Reach. OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Former Canadian Olympic figure skater Alexandra Paul died in a collision involving seven vehicles in Ontario earlier this week, according to Skate Canada. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — NASCAR driver Ryan Preece is “awake, alert and mobile” after his car rolled about a dozen times during a terrifying crash at Daytona International Speedway.Stewart-Haas Racing said Sunday morning that Preece “has been communicating with family and friends.” He was hospitalized overnight.The 32-year-old Preece was able to climb out of his mangled No. 41 Ford on Saturday night with help before emergency workers put him on a gurney and into an ambulance. Fire rescue crews and police responded to a fire in a Davie apartment complex. The flames ignited in a house located on the 11000 block of Southwest 15th Manor, around midnight on Sunday.Davie Fire Department reported one adult and one child that sustained smoke inhalation, both were transported to Broward Health Medical Center in serious condition.American Red Cross is assisting approximately 10 adults and 10 children from other units who have been displaced at least for the night.The fire remains under investigation.Please check back on WSVN.com and 7News for more details on this developing story.Latest news
