(CNN) — House Republicans are once again scrambling for a path forward after Minnesota Rep. Tom Emmer dropped his bid for speaker just hours after winning his party’s nomination. The swift exit from the race is the latest sign that Republicans are still no closer to electing a new speaker three weeks after Kevin McCarthy’s historic ouster.Republicans quickly pivoted to attempting to find a new nominee following Emmer’s abrupt withdrawal from the race and held another candidate forum Tuesday evening. There are now five candidates in the running: Reps. Byron Donalds of Florida, Chuck Fleischmann of Tennessee, Mark Green also of Tennessee, Mike Johnson of Louisiana and Roger Williams of Texas. The conference is expected to vote later in the evening to select a new nominee.Republicans are under intensifying pressure to find a new leader as the House remains in a state of paralysis, and the GOP remains unable to govern without a speaker. He was instrumental to the 2013 championship, anchoring the bullpen with a career-best 1.18 ERA over 61 regular-season appearances. He made 10 relief appearances during that year’s postseason, including nine scoreless outings (eight consecutively). In his post-playing career, the 43-year-old found a different way to impact a franchise’s pitching; as the Cubs’ assistant general manager and vice president of pitching, he’s transformed their farm system into a well-oiled arms development machine. For the Red Sox, who seek new leadership but want much of their internal structure to stay the same, Bres...Danvers holds off Gloucester, 1-0, in fierce field hockey battle

DANVERS – The hard-earned Northeastern Conference title already belonged to the Danvers field hockey team, but a 1-0 win over next-best Gloucester on Tuesday completed some much-desired, unfinished business.Maddie Chase’s goal on a corner with 13:47 to play marked the only offense, putting the Falcons (13-2-2) ahead despite getting their first shot-on-goal of the game about 30 seconds before. It was a pleasant reward for a tenacious defensive effort, which staved off a loaded Fishermen (12-3-2) attack that controlled play for most of the first three quarters. Gloucester didn’t let up, but goalie Megan McGinnity (six saves) and the Danvers defense in front of her were equally resilient.Considering the tie in the first matchup, and that the Fishermen rank higher in the Div. 3 power rankings, it was a meaningful win.“Gloucester is such a huge competitor in the NEC, and it just is always great to have a win against them,” Chase said. “It feels a little different to go undefeated in the N...Former NFL player charged in connection with mother's death to appear in court
