Central Coast SectionBoysEthan Harrington had himself a day at the Central Coast Section swim championships. The Palo Alto junior broke his own meet record in the 50-yard freestyle, touching the wall at Hollister High on Saturday in a blistering 19.57 seconds to eclipse the record-breaking time of 19.73 that he achieved last year. But freshening up the record book was only part of his story,He led off the meet by swimming the anchor leg as Palo Alto won the 200 medley relay in 1:32.13.From there, he followed up his win in the 50 free by finishing first in the 100 free in another sizzling time, 43.53. He just missed the meet record of 43.52 that Bellarmine’s Max Saunders set in 2019.Harrington finished the day by swimming the opening leg on Palo Alto’s 400 freestyle relay team, which placed first in 3:02.67.When the meet ended, he got to celebrate with teammates as Palo Alto easily repeated as team champion with 334 points. So far, it’s been messy.

New Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price arrived at a courtroom last month with a novel idea: Lop nearly a century off the prison sentence of a man who had been convicted of murder as a juvenile. The request had little precedent in Alameda County: Should a man sentenced to 114 years for his role in the killing a 15-year-old girl be allowed to walk free after just a decade behind bars? But before a judge could even take the bench, Price found herself in a pitched confrontation with an unexpected courtroom guest — a prosecutor whom she had placed on administrative leave, but who decided to appear anyway, an apparent act of defiance against Price’s new sentencing recommendation. In a remarkable scene, Price ordered the man to leave the gallery — a demand he flatly refused. The surprise encounter underscored the messy nature of Price’s first four months in office. Facing off against the entrenched interests of the criminal justice system — and occasionally undone by messy manage...A massive Mormon temple is headed for San Jose. But where?

Nestled in the Oakland Hills and soaring 170 feet high into the heavens, the granite temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints serves as the single most important site for religious rituals for the Bay Area’s estimated 100,000 Mormons. But the East Bay city’s dominance as the center of the LDS community will soon change. By the end of the decade, San Jose is set to get its own temple, the first of its kind in Silicon Valley and destined to become a major architectural and spiritual landmark, attracting tens of thousands of adherents. The moon rises behind the Oakland hills and the Mormon Temple in Oakland in 2022. (Ray Chavez/Bay Area News Group) Announced in April by the church’s 98-year-old president, Russell M. Nelson, the project is one of nearly 150 new LDS temples planned across the world in the coming years, a testament to the religion’s vast financial resources and push to have a presence in all corners of the globe, stretching from...‘Our training is our lived experience’: One woman’s journey from homelessness to advocacy

RICHMOND – With clipboard in hand and neon green safety vest on, Amanda Jenkins calls out to a gray-bearded man sweeping the road at the Castro Street homeless encampment under Richmond Parkway.“Will you fill out this survey?” she asks. “It’s for our meeting in Sacramento next month.”Surrounded by trailers and old cars covered with blue tarps and billboard posters (“They’re great at keeping the rain out – you’d only know if you’ve lived outside!”), she makes her way to the next person she finds at the quiet encampment. He is busy loading big black bags of trash onto a truck when she greets him with a fond punch in the shoulder and rattles off the questions on the survey.“How long were you homeless?” “Where do you live?” “Do you think every citizen should get universal basic income?”He answers. She jots. Well-versed with the uncertainty of life on the streets, Jenkins is a volunteer leader for the nonprofit Faith in Action East Bay and was collecting responses from current or fo...Today in Sports – NY Knicks win their first NBA championship

PARIS (AP) — With the race for European spots heating up, Monaco put daylight between itself and its main rivals in the French league with a 2-1 win at last-placed Angers on Sunday. With four games left to play, Monaco strengthened its grip on fourth spot behind the leading trio of PSG, Lens and Marseille by moving five points clear of Lille. The fourth-placed side in Ligue 1 qualifies for the Europa League. Lille lost ground on Monaco when Reims snapped a three-match losing streak thanks to Marshall Munetsi’s winner on Saturday. Trailing three points behind Lille, sixth-placed Rennes also misfired, losing 2-1 at Nice.Monaco did not play particularly well against Angers. But a superb shot from outside the box into the top right corner from Aleksandr Golovin coupled with Myron Boadu’s finish in the 60th minute were enough to secure the win, although Abdallah Sima’s header four minutes later ensured a tense finish. Leader PSG later traveled to struggling Troyes looking for ...Testigos del tiroteo mortal en un centro comercial de Texas describen la caótica y horrible escena

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — Students squinting along a sunny stretch of sidewalk outside the Roanoke College library find a moment of cool refuge beneath the leafy shade of an old, but steady-growing champion.A Dutch elm tree outside Fintel Library is the largest of its species measured in Virginia, with a trunk that’s almost 21 feet around, stretching about 94 feet up toward the sun. Lofty branches spread 80 feet outward, casting friendly shade to passersby on a hot spring day.Using a long tape measure to note the tree’s width and spread, plus a laser tool to gauge height, volunteer tree steward Harry Van Guilder scribbled those arboreal measurements on his clipboard on a recent Wednesday. During the six year span since he last measured this state champion for the Virginia Big Trees program, Van Guilder said its trunk width grew at a rate of about an inch per year.“For a tree at this maturity, and as slow-growing as they are, it still amazes me,” he said. “It’s starting to decline a little...Latest news
